Bengal Cat World Advent Calendar – Day Seventeen

Hello my friends, Spot here!

Well, there’s just one more week left of our advent calendar and there’s still plenty of kitty phrases I can think of 🙂 I bet you thought I might be running out by now – eh? It just goes to show how ingrained us felines are in your hoomin lives 😆 So here’s today’s pic!

Zzzz…. Zzzz…. Zzzzzzzzz

Lula and I are sleeping on our bed as you can see… what’s another name for bed? Cradle! So today’s phrase is Cat’s Cradle! 🙂 This is the name of a game rather than a phrase as such, and it’s been around a lot longer than you may imagine!

The origin of the phrase or of the game aren’t exactly known, though the game will probably have been played in one form or another for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The first printed reference to the phrase is in Abraham Tucker’s The light of nature pursued, 1768:

“An ingenious play they call cat’s cradle; one ties the two ends of a packthread together, and then winds it about his fingers, another with both hands takes it off perhaps in the shape of a gridiron, the first takes it from him again in another form, and so on alternately changing the packthread into a multitude of figures whose names I forget, it being so many years since I played at it myself.”

So there we have it! More evidence of hoomins and kitties living in harmony 🙂

Take care my friends!
Love from Spot

xxxxx

  3. I hadn’t heard of that game since I was a kid 😀 The only figure I remember how to do is the teacup, though LOL Another great history lesson!

  4. Awww so that´s the “Cat´s cradle” 😛 . We used to play that game, but with making all the different figures ourselves, not between each other. 😎 Lovely

  5. I remember playing this game as a child also and with my kids when they were growing up. I haven’t thought about this game for years either. May be time to find a little string and try it again! Spot you and Lula look so comfy on your bed–it’s so nice to see you snuggle together. Can’t wait til tomorrow! xxxxx
