Bengal Cat World Advent Calendar – Day Five

Hello my friends, Spot here!

Welcome to day five of our advent calendar! Just 20 days to go now until Santa comes to visit me! 🙂 I hope he gets here OK because the weather in the UK today has been very stormy 😯 It’s been extremely windy – Lula, Friday and I decided we didn’t want to go out at all, and Harry & Robbie only went out for a short while!

But I digress! Take a look at this photo and see if you can work out what today’s phrase is 🙂

High Five!

So today’s phrase isn’t “high five” (that’s just Lula being silly!) but rather a cat’s paw. There are two possible meanings for this 🙂 To be labeled a “cat’s paw” means someone has taken advantage of you and you weren’t smart enough to “cat”ch on.   The phrase has its origins in an old folk tale where a monkey tricks a cat into reaching into a fireplace to pull out some roasting chestnuts. The monkey then got the chestnuts from the cat, but the cat got burned 🙁 Ooooh! I always make sure the fire isn’t on when I think about going up the chimney! 😆

The other way the phrase is used is by sailors – cat’s paw means a brisk breeze that might catch you unawares (like the ones we’ve been having today!) – the way a playful cat might paw you.

So today, my friends, you got two for the price of one! We love a bargain! 🙂

Don’t forget to join us tomorrow for Day 6!

Take care my friends,

Love from Spot xxxxx

  1. I’m really enjoying this Advent Calendar, Spot! Learning some interesting things :D.

BTW, where I come from, a “cat’s paw” can also be the pattern gusts of wind can make on still water – just as if a cat were batting at its surface (not that you’d ever do that, would you? ;)).

  2. You and Lula must spen a lot of time either ‘googling’ or with your encyclopedia! What clever cats you are……do Harry, Robbie and Friday help too? xx

  3. Spot, I am really enjoying these phrases and their meanings!! Wow!! You must be a busy little boy doing all this research!! Thanks for sharing this wonderful info!! xoxoxoxo <3
